Formed in 1933, the future HG Panzer Division started life as a Police unit loyal to Hermann Goering and the NSDAP. As Goering moved on to take over the Luftwaffe, his personal police battalion moved with him and would continue to grow during the interwar and later war years to the size of a Corps. The unit would be involved in the early Blitzkriegs at the outset of the war serving in France, the Low Countries, and Russia, before going to North Africa and the Mediterranean and ultimately finishing the war back on the Eastern Front. As one of Goering's favorites, the unit was well supplied and equipped, getting the best recruits, all of which would be reflected in its' combat performance, often cited even by the Allies as the best tank unit of the conflict.
