FJR.15 FALLSCHIRMJAGER REGIMENT 15
Formed as part of the 5th Fallschirmjager Division in early 1944, the 15th Regiment was formed largely with "surplus" Luftwaffe flight-related and other personnel who were no longer needed in their former roles due to the severe fuel shortages and formed around an experienced cadre of FJ from other regiments. At the outset of the Normandy Landings, FJR.15 was one of the few largely combat ready FJ units available and was quickly thrown into the fray where it performed admirably but suffered high casualties like most other units involved in the Normandy Campaign. Rebuilt by cannibalizing FJR.13 and 14 to replace its' 1st and 2nd Battalions, FJR.15 would continue serving on the Western Front until the end of war with a large portion of the unit taken prisoner by the US Army in the Rhur Pocket with the remainder finally surrendering in the Harz Mountains in 1945.
